Correlation FAQ

All my alts are 0.8+ correlated with BTC

Welcome to crypto. Most altcoins follow BTC. Your "diversified" portfolio isn't really diversified. Add stables or non-crypto assets for real diversification.

Where to find uncorrelated crypto?

Hard. Some DeFi tokens show lower correlation in bull markets. Stablecoins by design. In crashes, everything correlates. Don't count on it.

Correlation 0.9 - basically same asset?

Not quite, but close. Moves 90% together. The 10% difference can still matter. But for risk management, treat them as very similar.

How many data points needed?

30+ minimum, 60+ better, 90+ ideal. Daily data for a few months. Too few points = unreliable correlation. More data = more confidence.

Crash correlation vs normal?

Correlations spike in crashes - everything goes to 1. The correlation you calculate in calm times won't protect you when panic hits.

Negative correlation crypto?

Extremely rare. Maybe inverse tokens or some derivatives. Don't expect to find natural negative correlation among regular crypto assets.
