When to Use Leverage Farming

High APR Farms

Farm offering 120% APR, borrow rate is 8%. Use 3x leverage with $20k to farm $60k. Earn $72k annually, pay $3.2k interest on $40k borrowed. Net $68.8k on $20k investment is 344% effective APR. The spread makes leverage extremely profitable here.

Stable Pair Farming

USDC/USDT at 25% APR, zero impermanent loss risk. Use 5x leverage safely since price won't move. With $10k, farm $50k position. Earn $12.5k, pay $4k interest (10% on $40k borrowed). Net $8.5k is 85% return with minimal liquidation risk. Perfect for capital efficiency.

Low Borrow Rates

Protocol offering 5% borrow rate during incentives. Any farm above 15% APR becomes profitable with leverage. Use 2x-3x on multiple farms simultaneously. Spread $50k across 5 leveraged positions. When borrow rates are this cheap, leverage everything that's not nailed down.

Short-Term Plays

New farm launches at 500% APR for first week. Use 3x leverage knowing rates will drop. Farm for 3-5 days at massive APR, close position before rates normalize. Made 40% in a week even after interest. High risk but calculated for short duration before IL or rate decay kills returns.

Arbitrage Opportunities

Same pair on two DEXs, one at 60% APR, one at 40%. Borrow rate is 12%. Use 4x leverage on the 60% farm. The 48% spread (60% - 12%) on leveraged capital generates outsized returns. Move positions weekly as rates shift between platforms.

Capital Efficiency

You only have $15k but see 3 good farms. Use 2x leverage to deploy $30k total split across all three. Each gets $10k leveraged position. Better than picking just one farm with $15k unleveraged. Diversify while maximizing capital deployment across opportunities.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is leverage farming?

Leverage farming means borrowing assets to increase your farming position. If you have $10k and borrow another $20k at 3x leverage, you're now farming with $30k total. Your rewards are 3x higher, but you pay interest on the borrowed amount. If the farm APR beats the borrow rate, you profit more than farming without leverage.

How do I calculate leveraged farming returns?

Net return = (Total position x Farm APR) - (Borrowed amount x Borrow rate). With $10k capital, 3x leverage means $30k position. At 50% farm APR, you earn $15k. If borrow rate is 10% on $20k borrowed, you pay $2k interest. Net profit is $15k - $2k = $13k on your $10k, giving you 130% effective APR instead of just 50%.

What leverage ratio should I use?

Start with 1.5-2x if you're new. Experienced farmers use 3-5x. Higher leverage amplifies both gains and losses. If the farm APR is 80% and borrow rate is 15%, 3x leverage is profitable. But if prices move against you, you risk liquidation. Never use max leverage on volatile pairs.

What's the biggest risk in leverage farming?

Liquidation. If your collateral value drops too much, the protocol sells your position to repay the loan. On 5x leverage, a 20% price drop can wipe you out. Also, if borrow rates spike above farm APR, you're losing money every day. Always monitor health factor and have an exit plan.

Can I lose more than my initial investment?

Usually no, because protocols liquidate before you go negative. But flash crashes can cause bad debt. If you started with $10k at 5x leverage and got liquidated in a crash, you might lose 90%+ of your $10k. The borrowed funds are lost to liquidation penalties. Stick to lower leverage on stable pairs.

Which platforms offer leverage farming?

Alpaca Finance, Alpha Homora, Francium (Solana), Vega Protocol. Each has different leverage limits, supported pairs, and liquidation thresholds. Some go up to 8-10x leverage, but that's extremely risky. Start with platforms that have insurance funds and good liquidation engines.
