How royalties work in practice
Artist Mints 1000 PFPs
Minted at 0.08 ETH each, 7.5% royalty. Primary sales: 80 ETH revenue. Year 1: 500 ETH total trading volume. Royalty earnings: 37.5 ETH (more than initial mint!). Used calculator to test 5% vs 7.5% vs 10% before launch.
Flipper Lists on Blur
Bought NFT for 3 ETH, wants to flip at 5 ETH. Blur has 0.5% fee but buyer skipped optional royalty (5%). Expected: 4.725 ETH after 0.5% fee. Actually got: 4.975 ETH because no royalty paid. Seller nets more on zero-royalty platforms.
Creator Set 15% Royalty
Thought higher = better. NFT sold once for 2 ETH, then no trades for 6 months. Too expensive to flip with 15% + 2.5% platform fee. Relaunched collection at 5%, trading picked up. Total royalties: 8 ETH vs 3 ETH before. Less is more.
Gallery Sold Blue Chip
CryptoPunk sold for 200 ETH on OpenSea. No royalties (Punks predate royalty standard). Platform fee: 5 ETH. Gallery received: 195 ETH. If it had 5% royalty, would've lost 10 ETH more. Calculator showed exact net before listing.
Buyer Honors Royalty
Bought on platform with optional royalty. Chose to pay 5% anyway to support artist. Artist sent free companion NFT as thanks. Community noticed and respected the buyer. Sometimes paying royalties gets you perks and reputation.
Project Tracks Royalties
Used calculator to project earnings. 10,000 supply, 100 ETH monthly volume, 5% royalty = 5 ETH/month = 60 ETH/year. Built roadmap funded by royalties. Transparent with holders about how royalties fund development.
Common Questions
What are NFT royalties?
Money creators earn every time their NFT sells on secondary markets. Set once at mint, typically 2.5%-10%. If you mint with 5% royalty and NFT sells for 10 ETH later, you get 0.5 ETH. Applies to all future resales, creating recurring income stream.
Are royalties still enforced?
Not always. OpenSea made royalties optional in 2023. Blur doesn't enforce them. Some platforms still respect creator fees. When buying, you can choose to pay royalties or skip them. Many buyers still honor them to support artists.
How much do platforms charge?
OpenSea: 2.5%. Blur: 0.5%. LooksRare: 2%. Magic Eden: 2%. Rarible: 2.5%. Plus blockchain gas fees. Total selling cost = platform fee + royalty + gas. Calculator shows exact breakdown so you know net earnings.
Who pays the royalty?
Seller pays from sale proceeds. If NFT sells for 5 ETH with 10% royalty and 2.5% platform fee, seller receives 4.375 ETH (5 - 0.5 royalty - 0.125 platform fee). Buyer pays full 5 ETH. Royalty comes out of seller's cut.
Can I change royalty percentage?
No, it's set at mint and stored on-chain. Some collections have 0%, others 10%. Check collection details before buying. If you're minting, choose wisely - too high and people won't trade, too low and you miss earnings.
Do I earn royalties on first sale?
No. Creator gets primary sale revenue minus platform fees. Royalties only kick in on secondary sales (resales). If you mint 100 NFTs at 0.1 ETH each, you get ~9.75 ETH (10 - 2.5% fee). Then earn royalties whenever they resell.
What's a fair royalty percentage?
5-7.5% is standard. Big projects: 5% (BAYC, Azuki). Art projects: 10%. Utility/gaming: 2.5-5%. Higher royalties reduce trading volume. Lower means less recurring income. Most successful collections stick to 5%.
How do I maximize royalty income?
Build strong community - they honor royalties. Use platforms that enforce fees. Offer holder benefits so NFTs trade hands. More volume = more royalty events. 1000 ETH trading at 5% = 50 ETH royalties. Calculator shows potential earnings at different volumes.
